Gustave Dreyfus [1837-1914], Paris; [1] his estate; purchased 1930 by (Duveen Brothers, Inc., London and New York); purchased 1945 by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, New York; gift 1957 to NGA. [1] John Pope-Hennessy's catalogue for the Kress Collection gives the provenance prior to Dreyfus as Eugene Piot and no. 25 in the 21-24 May 1890 sale of Piot's collection. Although the size is the same, the description of no. 25 fits instead another bell in the NGA collection, 1957.14.115 (see Renaissance Bronzes from the Samuel H. Kress Collection: Reliefs, Plaquettes, Statuettes, Utensils and Mortars, London, 1965: 147-148, no. 540).
