oil on canvas

Henriette Pauline de Monestay de Chazeron [d. 1858]; her nephew, Alexander, 5th marquis de Sinéty [1820-1905]. (Wildenstein & Co., New York) by 1939; sold to Samuel H. Kress [1863-1955] on 28 December 1944; gift to the National Gallery of Art in 1946; deaccessioned in 1959 and returned to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation; gift to El Paso Museum of Art, no.1961.1.58. Colin Eisler in Paintings from the Samuel H. Kress Collection : European Schools excluding Italian, Oxford, 1977, gives the provenance as Sinéty followed by duchesse de Brancas, but is almost certainly the reverse. Henriette Pauline de Monestay de Chazeron married in 1797 Louis Albert de Brancas [1775-1851] who was made duc de Céreste-Brancas in 1785; they had no children and she was the last of the Chazeron line. After her death in 1858 her estate was inherited by her nephew, the marquis de Sinéty. (see Gustave Chaix-D'Estang, Dictionnaire des familles françaises ancienne ou notable à la fin de la XIXe siècle, vol. 6, 1907, p. 357). Exhibited at the New York World's Fair, Masterpieces of Art, European Paintings and Sculpture from 1300-1800, 1939, p. 154, Cat. No. 316.
