[1] Colin Eisler, in Paintings from the Samuel H. Kress Collection: European Schools Excluding Italian, Oxford, 1977, p.41-42, suggests that this painting is the same as that with the same subject, signed and dated 1558, recorded by O. Thulin, 'Melanchthons Bildnis und Werk in zeitgenossischer Kunst', in Philipp Melanchthon - Forschungsbeiträgezur 400 Wiederkehr seines Todestages, Gottingen,1961, p. 190, as formerly owned by the antiquary J. Rosenbaum in Berlin. [2] Published in Sotheby's insert to catalogue of buyers' names and sale prices.
