Kress [1863-1955] on 28 June 1933 as Sebastiani Mainardi; gift to the National Gallery of Art in 1939; deaccessioned in 1952 and returned to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation; gift to Birmingham Museum of Art in 1961, no. 61.97.  According to Fern Rusk Shapley, Paintings from the Samuel H. Kress Collection, Volume 1, Italian Paintings XIII-XV Century, London, 1966, p. 127. Shapley disputes the provenance cited in Preliminary Catalogue of Paintings and Sculpture, National Gallery of Art, Washington 1941, p. 121, which includes Earl Spencer, Althorp House and Charles Fairfax Murray.
